Post #58: Light to pack entertainment for mountaineering

Light to pack entertainment for mountaineering:  Playing Cards!

When a person goes mountaineering, or to a place likeMount Everestlike I did last year, there's a lot of different things which need to be prepared in advance: footwear, clothing, equipment, the trail you're to follow, first aid. When you're new to it, these things can occupy your mind and keep you from realizing what else should be packed. For example, have you ever considered that you might need some entertainment while you are out there?

Post #55: Brain Patterning to 14,148’ Democrat via the West Ridge Circuit; Sunday Dec 2, 2012.
Snowpack in the Arkansas Basin almost non-existent.

I took my good friend Jeff Morgan for an early climb of Democrat’s West Ridge, a moderately technical but spectacular climb of one of Colorado’s classic ridges for a 14er.  99.9% of all people hike up from Kite lake to the East of Democrat, so by taking the West Ridge we accessed the peak from CO 91 and the 4WD Access road in the upper Arkansas Basin Valley, and climbed a route seldom climbed but spectacularly challenging.

#54 Black Friday on the Halo-Holy Cross Circuit 14,005' Nov 23 2012.

No Malls up here, only amazing vistas, sunsets and a 16 mile loop!

Since I am so busy today, I'm not gonna put up a long winded story, but instead, show some photos and videos from my exceptional day on Black Friday.  I went up and knocked out the Holy Cross to Halo Peak, to Halo Ridge to Notch Mountain shelter and descent via Constantine to the Halfmoon Trailhead.

The loop was an  incredible and scenic 16 miles covered in 8 hours including breaks.

Post #53: Snow Flurries and Fun Up on Mt. Arkansas 13,800ish.

Headwaters of the Arkansas River Nov 18, 2012

Sunday was a great day, light winds down low, some snow up high and minimal snowpack, so I took my friends Chris Tomer and Jeff Morgan out in the 10Mi /Mosquito Range for Mt. Arkansas’ NW ridge.  About a month ago I climbed Arkansas from the East by circling the peak.  This time the goal was a more direct line up the easy ridge, across a few fun crossings and onto a small summit.

We started at 6am and Jeff was a little carsick cause he’s not used to riding in the back of a vehicle, so we got going in the trees after he visited the pine porcelain gods.

Post #52: Rare Fall Ascent of Snowmass Mountain 14,092’ Nov 3, 2012.

Solitude on Snowmass (14,092'), November 2-3 2012.

The late arrival of a weak and dry cold front from the north meant only clear skies and a lack of snowfall for the first weekend in November. To our good fortune,  Mr. Lynn Bailey and I took advantage of pre-winter with a rare chance to go and climb one of Colorado’s most isolated 14ers, Snowmass Mountain.

This adventure turned out to be one of many rewards.  Snowmass is roughly 10.5 miles one way from trailhead to summit.  We chose to hike the 8 miles into the vicinity of Snowmass Lake on Friday afternoon.

Inspiring story of my best friendJon Kedrowski's rescue of Jeff Lodico on Snowmass Mountain 14er....and their 1st reunion after the accident. I still remember Jon calling me that night saying, "Our friend Paul needs our help....a climber in his group fell...I'm going up, right now." This is how i've known Jon to be over the years....dropping everything to help others. He did it on Mount Everest last May and on Denali a few years ago.

Post #49 Mountaineering Requires Really Thick Skin:  October 7, 2012

Everyone is entitled to their opinions.....and for all you guys and gals out there wondering, I've just recently had some time to take a look at the criticisms on 14ers.com, as I am usually too busy out on the peaks or on some adventure to be able to take a look.

The purpose of this is to address some of the comments and questions out there in reference to Jeff Lodico's rescue a week ago today.

1. Latest Blog Posts seem to criticize my medical training.

Post #48: Credit to the SAR Teams for Jeff Lodico

Lets give credit where credit is due.  Jeff is currently in stable condition at Swedish Hospital in Denver. He is improving and getting ready to undergo surgery for his right hand and is recovering from a punctured lung from the fall and a broken arm, and damaged legs.  He has an incredible will to survive, and so please continue to pray for him.

I wanted to take the time to thank the Aspen and West Elk Search and Rescue and Everyone involved in getting Jeff lifted off the ledge and to a helicopter.

Post #47: Snowmass Mountain Rescue Sept. 30, 2012

Helping a Total Stranger, Snowmass Mountain, Sunday Sept 30th, 2012

The way I see it, I was going to be out in the mountains anyway on Sunday, and so I decided to make a difference. Something in my gut told me these guys needed help and I know that Mountain very well.   I have climbed the West side routes on Snowmass probably a dozen times. On Saturday Evening I got home and was updating my FB and Twitter when i came across some news from a friend of mine Paul Perea.  Paul had been climbing Snowmass Mountain on Saturday with Three Companions.

Post #46 Traversing Peaks AND Traversing the State

Post #46:  A Week of Traversing the Peaks and Traversing the State

What an endurance filled week it’s been.  It’s reminded me to never take anything for granted.  Sometimes I have been pushed out of my comfort zone with climbing peaks, and packing in all the speaking events I can.  But all of that hard work has made me a better person in the long run, especially in the mountains. The people out there have been so generous and very nice to meet all along the way, so thank you so much!
